Las fracasadas iniciativas de formar un grupo que repetidamente tendría Robert Sweet -futuro batería- a la edad de dieciocho años le obligan a optar por contar con la ayuda de un hermano tres años más pequeño que él, Michael Sweet -para la voz-, y más tarde con la de un amigo de la colegio llamado Richard Martínez -para la guitarra-. Richard Martínez, que como muchos hijos de emigrantes queria americanizar su nombre, adoptaría el alias de Oz Fox que había recibido en el colegio por las ya populares imitaciones que hacía de su venerado OZZY OSBOURNE (BLACK SABBATH), a quien homenajeaba como podía en aquella época en su propio grupo local Rest in Peace. De manera que los dos hermanos, habiendo tonteado con sus instrumentos durante unos años, con el Whittier´s Pioneer High School en común, forman Firestorm, y finalmnente -con la ayuda de Oz Fox, Roxx, que luego -para evitar confusiones con otra banda, acabó en Roxx Regime.Stryper is a Heavy Metal band from Orange County, California, USA. Formed in 1983, they are considered pioneers in the mainstream popularization of Christian rock/metal music. They have done what few other Christian bands have done; selling millions of albums to secular people and becoming one of MTV's most requested bands in the 80's. Stryper enjoyed great success during the late 80's before breaking up in 1992, when most 80's metal groups lost popularity. However, the band reunited in 2003.
The name "Stryper" derives from the King James Version of Isaiah 53:5:
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."(1)
The scriptural reference is also part of Stryper's logo on most of their releases. In addition, the band's name has been said to stand for:
